Nominations Committee - Jim Corman has announced that he will not be continuing as the nominating committee's chair person in 2011.  New chairman will be needed for this committee.  The chairperson is nominated by the president, but appointed by the Executive cabinet at their first meeting of the year.  If you are interested in chairing this committee, please let your interest be known.

bullet

Trail Committee - It is with a heavy heart and mixed emotions that Larrry Matthews has tendered his resignation as the Trail Committee chairman.  Larry has been our "trail leader" for many years.  These will be some mighty big shoes to fill.

bullet

Website - looking for new talent to oversee OHC's "public face" on the world-wide web. Current web-masters will continue to perform this function until a replacement can be found.  Ideally looking for someone with the enthusiasm and skill to take our site to the "next level".

Anyone interested in volunteering for any of the above positions should contact State President, Rick Patterson.

Trail News

Oak Openings damaged by storms - Here is a recap of what is going on up here after the tornadoes came through on Saturday night.  Route 64 is now open between Whitehouse and Swanton.  It was closed to allow crews to cleanup the debris. The Rider's Center is still closed until further notice. They are working to get it open. It has major tree damage. The mounting stand and barn seem to be undamaged.

Trails in Oak Openings - a few are being opened up. The trails that are being opened are those ones heading to the North.  ALL the trails in the South are closed indefinitely. This includes the Hour loop, complete south loop and all trails going to the lake. These were the trails that were hit the hardest and it could be a year or better before they open again -if at all.  This may be an opportunity for us to get new trails in this area.  PLEASE DON'T THINK YOU CAN GET AROUND THE CLOSED TRAILS - YOU WILL ONLY CREATE MORE PROBLEMS - AND POSSIBLY GET A TICKET FOR BEING IN A RESTRICTED AREA. (VERY COSTLY!)  THERE ALREADY HAVE BEEN RIDERS TRYING TO GO THROUGH. These trails in the south section are the trails most heavily used. Now you will be using those trails going North. There are a couple of shorter trails to the North - about the same as going to the lake and back. Check the maps available at the Rider's Center.

The Maumee State Forest is also closed at this time. They are working to get the overflow parking area opened - the trail between the overflow and the Rider's Center is CLOSED. That area is completely destroyed.  I do not know how the trails are coming out of the back of Harry Hughes - I believe they are ok.  Harry Hughes received no damage from the storm.

PLEASE- before you decide to come and ride at Oak Openings - call first - or check out the following websites for information. Detours are supposed to be marked.

www.metroparkstoledo.com   419-407-9700 Ask about Oak Openings horse trails
www.fcohc.com - I will post what I know there or call me  419-270-8916

Both the Maumee State Forest and Oak Openings are going to need a lot of help. We will let you know when we can start. They are still trying to figure all all the damage and need to figure it all out.  Please tell all your friends about this - Will try to keep everyone up to date on the news.

Cheryl Zielinski, Pres. Fulton County OHC

Here are a couple of pictures of the Rider's Center on Sunday morning. One is by the mounting stand and the other was were you used to head out on the trail. it will never be the same in the Rider's Center.

Legislative News

The H.O.R.S.E Act - The Humane and Optimal Restoration and Sustainability of Equines Act - is intended to offer legislators an alternative proposal with solutions to ensure the humane care, management, and euthanasia of horses in a way that will ensure the long-term viability of the horse industry and to restore the market for all horses.  The act is being proposed by The United Organizations of the Horse which consists of horse owners, horse organizations and concerned citizens familiar with the industry.  The Act proposes humane treatment, safe transportation, and regulation without impeding the market, transport or processing or use of horses in anyway.  It does not take away the property rights of horse owners.  It does not eliminate the right of Americans to decide how, or if they choose to market or consume horse meat.  It also encourages the efforts of states, tribes and private citizens to implement services, facilities and options for all horse owners.  For more information go to www.unitedorgofthehorse.org  (posted 2/10/10)

Ohioans for Humane Farms -  led by The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS, an activist lobbying organization advocating vegetarianism)  petitioned the Ohio Secretary of State 2/1/10 in support of a farm-animal care measure that the group plans to place on the Ohio Ballot this fall.  The group needs to collect 600,000 signatures of registered Ohio voters.  The measure would require that the Livestock Standards Board (a 13-member, bi-partisan board that was established in the fall with the passage of Issue 2)  adopt "certain minimum standards" that the group said would prevent "cruel and inhumane treatment" of certain farm animals.  Specifically , the measure would, according to the announcement "provide guidance" to the Board targeting modern cage housing for laying hens and sow and veal calf stalls and other practices such as euthanasia.  Passage of the measure would limit the effectiveness of the Board in establishing it's own standards of care.    (posted 2/10/10)

Caution! - The American Horse Heritage Fund is campaigning among horse owners to raise funds to protect horses from 'unconscionable...senseless abuse'.  This fund is an arm of the Humane Society of the United States, a radical animal right group that does not necessarily have horse owners best interests are heart.  Please do your homework and research what these organizations really stand for and base your decision on facts and not an emotional response.  (alert provided 3/26/09 by the OHC legislative committee)
